Woman seriously injured after Commuter Rail train, car collide in Belmont

BELMONT, Mass. — A car and a Commuter Rail train collided in Belmont Friday morning, causing delays on the Fitchburg line and seriously injuring a woman.

Transit Police Superintendent Richard Sullivan said there were three boys in the car at about 8 a.m. Friday when the 58-year-old driver got stuck in Belmont.

An 11-year-old boy and a 10-year-old boy escaped safely, but the woman was outside her vehicle still trying to get the 6-year-old boy out when the inbound train to Boston struck her car.

She was taken to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. The boys were taken to the hospital as a precaution, although they were unhurt. Only the oldest boy was the woman's son.

MBTA shuttle buses replaced service from Belmont into Boston following the collision.

No names were released.

Sullivan says the investigation is ongoing.
