Cold is here to stay through Tuesday morning commute

Another cold night for New England, though winds are certainly dying down. You will wake up to sunshine Tuesday and as some milder air moves in, clouds will come with it.

I am concerned that with a snow cover in most areas still and a cold start to the day, not everyone will warm up before the rain arrives during the evening drive.

The upper atmosphere will be cold enough to support snow, especially away from the coast. That will mean some mixing with snow, especially in the Berkshires and northern Worcester hills, as well as Vermont and southwest New Hampshire.

Snow will certainly fall in the ski areas to the north. Still, while ski country gets a few inches of powder, we'll just see a coating in spots north and west of 495 by Wednesday morning.

It will be quiet through Friday while we watch the computer models wrestle with the next potential storm for (drum roll) the weekend. One model (GFS) brings heavy snow to interior New England, but seems to hit at rain or mixing closer to the coast.

It is early to say for sure, but something we will again be busy monitoring this week. We might be adding to our 32" of snow so far in February.

So far, we are the 7th snowiest February since 1890 with the last snowiest February being a decade ago. That was the year of the Presidents' Day snowstorm that brought 27.5 inches of snow- more than the blizzard of 1978. It still ranks as the single biggest snowstorm in Boston.
