Cohasset woman fatally struck by car at Braintree rotary

BRAINTREE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – A 52-year-old Cohasset woman has been identified as the pedestrian who was fatally struck by a car at Braintree's Union Street Rotary Monday night.

Officers responded to the Union Street Rotary at about 8:30 p.m. after several callers reported a woman was hiding behind a guardrail and rolling around in the rotary.

Upon arrival, they found the woman barefoot and lying on the southbound side of the rotary, approximately 75 yards from the Route 3 South on ramp.

The victim, who was later identified as Lydia Drew, was taken to South Shore Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The driver of the car that struck Drew, a 51-year-old Pembroke man, told police he had just left the MBTA parking garage and was getting ready to merge with rotary traffic when he felt his truck "run over something." The man told police he did not see the woman before the crash.

Authorities said alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. At this time, the man has not been cited for any motor vehicle violations.

Earlier that day, a broadcast to area departments was issued by another South Shore police department after the victim, against medical advice, left a health care facility where she was being treated after allegedly making threats to harm herself.

The incident remains under investigation.
