Club owner asked for police detail before shooting

LOWELL, Mass. (AP) — Lowell police say a fatal shooting outside a city nightclub may not have happened there had the department been able to fill club ownership's request for a police detail.

But Capt. Kelly Richardson says the shooting may just have occurred elsewhere.

Richardson tells The Sun (http://bit.ly/1ao8NCN ) the owner of the Crown nightclub requested a detail for early Sunday morning, but the overburdened police department couldn't fill the request.

A fight outside the club at about 2 a.m. resulted in the death of 25-year-old Keny Sien of Dracut.

There have been no arrests.

City Councilor Rodney Elliott, who's on the public safety subcommittee, said the police department needs more officers on the late shift.

Richardson says the department puts extra officers on for the weekend but they can't be everywhere.
