Child struck by car at Chelsea bus stop, driver charged

CHELSEA, Mass. — A six-year-old suffered minor injuries after being struck at a bus stop on Carter Street Monday morning.

Police tell FOX25 the crash happened around 7:45 a.m. after a car went around the bus's extended stop sign at 291 Carter St. The boy was in the road at the time, and was hit. The 6-year-old sustained some "bumps and scrapes," police said, and was taken to the hospital by ambulance with his mother.

The driver of the car stayed at the scene and was charged with operating to endanger. There is no right of arrest for that charge, so the driver will be summoned into court.

Other bus drivers told FOX25 that people going around schools stopped to pick up or let off children is a rampant problem.

"Even though we put these lights on people continue to pass me all the time and I know they do it to others too... and I think it's terrible," said Camille Kisthart, a bus driver.

Federal statistics show there were more than 1,300 killed in school transportation related crashes between 2005 and 2014.

A fifth of those deaths include people outside the school bus, such as pedestrians and bicyclists.
