Child critical after overloaded boat capsizes; 12 rescued from Buzzards Bay

WAREHAM, Mass. — An 8-year-old boy is in critical condition at a Boston hospital after he and 11 others needed to be rescued from Buzzards Bay after their overloaded boat capsized.

There was a massive response from rescuers when the 18-foot vessel capsized just before 5 p.m. sending nine children and three adults into the water.

Rescuers are crediting a good Samaritan who rushed to the scene after seeing the harrowing incident unfold.

That person was able to help nine of the 12 people before other rescue teams arrived at the scene near Hog Island Channel.

About 12 other agencies joined the rescue efforts, along with the Coast Guard.

When rescuers found the little boy, he was unresponsive. But rescue workers performed CPR and were able to get a pulse before he was rushed to a hospital.

An update on the boy’s condition was not immediately available Thursday morning.

All of the other people where were rescued were taken to hospitals and have since been released.

They were all wearing life jackets at the time, and officials say this incident is a serious reminder to everyone that boaters need to stay within their speed and capacity guidelines.
