Chicopee officer hurt in SWAT training excercise

CHICOPEE, Mass. (AP) - A Chicopee police officer has been shot and wounded during a training exercise.

Mayor Michael Bissonette tells the Springfield Republican the officer is in Baystate Medical Center in Springfield with injuries that are serious but not life-threatening.

Bissonette didn't release details of the Monday afternoon accident, which happened during a special weapons and tactics training exercise in a vacant housing area outside Westover Air Reserve Base.

Hamden District Attorney Mark Mastroianni said the accident is being investigated by state and Chicopee police, as is standard procedure.

The vacant housing complex was given to Chicopee by the Navy two years ago.
