Cherington says Sox have much to prove

BOSTON (AP) - The Boston Red Sox have a lot of money to spend at this year's winter meetings.

General manager Ben Cherington isn't sure that's the way to go.

Cherington said on Saturday that there is more than one way to rebuild after last year's 93-loss season. The Red Sox have a lot of money to spend after shipping Carl Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez and Josh Beckett and more than $250 million in salaries to the Los Angeles Dodgers. But this year's winter meetings aren't expected to be a high-priced player bazaar like previous years.

Cherington made the comments at the team's winter fan festival at Fenway Park.

Also Saturday, the Red Sox confirmed the signing of outfielder Jonny Gomes to a two-year deal.
