BROOKLINE, Mass. — The Massachusetts Department of Public Health has confirmed a case of tuberculosis at a childcare center in Brookline.
The DPH tells FOX25 the TB case was identified at Tiny World Child Care.
"A case of tuberculosis has been identified in Brookline at Tiny World Child Care. DPH is monitoring the situation, and working closely with local officials and the Tiny World Child Care community. Tuberculosis is preventable and treatable, and transmission of TB in these cases is very uncommon.
In line with standard procedure, individuals who might have been exposed have been notified, and testing is being recommended and offered. Any positive test results will be followed up with evaluation and recommendation for treatment to prevent development of active TB disease. This is a standard approach to assessing risk of exposure and for evaluating individuals for infection. "
Parents were notified about the confirmed case in a letter sent home.
DPH tells FOX25 they will not confirm the age of the patient, which means it could be a child or adult. The childcare center was scheduled to open Tuesday.
Symptoms of tuberculosis include fever, fatigue and coughing up blood.
