Caroline Kennedy endorses Markey ahead of Tuesday primary

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Caroline Kennedy announced her endorsement for Rep. Ed Markey in the special election for U.S. Senate Saturday.

President John F. Kennedy's daughter announced the endorsement as Markey prepares for Tuesday's Democratic primary.

Kennedy cites the congressman's commitment to health care legislation and women's rights as her reasons for supporting him in the race.

"Whether it is his commitment to ensuring health care for every American, safeguarding women's rights or protecting our planet from climate change, he has tackled tough challenges even in the face of strong opposition," says Kennedy. "Ed Markey works tirelessly for our future and the future of our children."

Rep. Markey responded to the endorsement Saturday, saying he is "so proud to have the support of Caroline Kennedy, a friend and passionate advocate for our children, families, and seniors."

The congressman will square off against Rep. Stephen Lynch Tuesday. Businessman Gabriel Gomez, former U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan, and State Rep. Dan Winslow will appear on the ballot in the Republican primary.
