Carlton Fisk's Fla. home burglarized

BRADENTON, Fla. (MyFoxBoston.com) - It was one steal at home that Hall of Fame catcher Carton Fisk couldn't stop. While he was out of town with family, someone broke into his Bradenton, Fla. home and went straight for his valuables.

"Pretty large sum of collectible coins were taken -- silver coins. None of the baseball memorabilia was taken," said Dave Bristow with the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

The break-in was discovered by Mike McClain, a pest control worker who's known Fisk and his wife for years. He says while he was spraying the house Thursday, he noticed the back door had been taken off the hinges.

"They're fantastic people," McClain said of the Fisks. "I felt horrible. I felt like I was personally affected by it."

Deputies estimate the stolen coins to be in the thousands of dollars.

Fisk played 24 years in the major leagues, beginning his career with the Boston Red Sox. He may be most known for a home run he hit in game six of the '75 World Series.

In 2000, he was elected into the Hall of Fame.

His father-in-law said he was surprised to learn that the thief was only after coins.

"Linda, Carlton's wife, was very, very upset," Norman Dunbar said.

Based on the specific items taken, deputies think Fisk was targeted in this case. So far there are no suspects to speak of in this case of foul play.
