Cardinal O'Malley listed as a favorite to be pope

(MyFoxBoston.com) – Boston's Cardinal Sean O'Malley is being called one of the leading candidates to be the next leader of the Catholic Church.

Several Italian newspapers have O'Malley listed among a handful of frontrunners to be elected pope.

The cardinal said Mass Sunday in Italian at his assigned church in Rome.

Tuesday morning, he will join 114 other cardinals in the Sistine Chapel for the start of the secret conclave to elect a successor to Benedict XVI. They'll vote until one person receives the majority of 77.

Cardinal O'Malley has repeatedly downplayed any speculation about his future. However, several Vatican watchers say he could emerge as a popular compromise candidate because of his handling of the clergy sex abuse crisis in the Archdiocese of Boston.
