Car crashes into two homes in Brockton

BROCKTON, Mass. — A violent crash led to an extremely close call for some Brockton residents.

“It felt like an earthquake because the whole house shook,” said Michael Rivera.

That was no seismic spasm in Brockton Saturday night. It was a nearly three-ton block of steel clipping one house on North Quincy Street then brutally bearing down on another.

“Took out my front steps, bushes, slight corner of my house,” said Josh Hill.

“It’s a gaping hole… into the basement of the foundation of the house,” said Rivera.

The crash happened around 10 p.m. The driver told police his brakes failed and in a moment of panic, he steered the SUV across homeowner Josh Hill’s lawn.

“Perfect tire marks straight into my house,” said Hill.

Hill wasn’t home, but his surveillance camera caught the final moments for the big blue Chevy.

“Made a claim today to the insurance company… get the ball rolling. Luckily, no one was hurt, seriously,” said Hill.

And that’s with a high potential for tragedy. There were three young children in the car.

“I was stunned, shaken up. And so were the children,” said Rivera.

Stunned, but not especially surprised. Rivera says North Quincy Street might as well be named Accident Alley and speed is a major reason why.

“This is a 30 mile per hour speed limit. Maybe they should lower it down to 25.”

But they did that around the corner, and it does not appear to be working.

Around that same time, Saturday night on Warren Avenue, another crash.

“He went forward and hit that other house right there,” said Rolando Barbosa.

Then that driver hit reverse and crushed his mom’s beloved garden.

“I guess she's gonna have to start from scratch again. But that's the only sad part. Because she really, really was working hard on her garden,” said Barbosa.
