Cape Cod woman indicted for fraud in lottery scheme

HYANNIS, Mass. — A Cape Cod woman scammed people across the country out of thousands of dollars with a ‘lottery scheme,’ according to indictments handed up in Federal Court this week.

Ashley Barrett, 25, was arrested in late March and accused of mail fraud.

The seven indictments for mail fraud charges stem from a scheme police say she used to mail people letters saying the recipient had won the lottery and needed to pay a fee to receive their winnings.

One victim had mailed Barrett seven checks totaling more than $23,000, police said.

A co-conspirator, Peter Anthony Chin, was also indicted in March.

Barrett could face up to 20 years in prison and up to $250,000 in fines.
