YARMOUTH (AP)- Yarmouth police say they collected 72 weapons during a weekend gun buyback.
Chief Frank Frederickson says the program offers amnesty - from gun permit rules only - to anyone who wants to get rid of guns and ammunition.
He tells the Cape Cod Times the turned-in guns are typically not being used, or have been inherited. Some guns are turned in after people allowed their permits to expire.
He says the goal is to prevent them from falling into the wrong hands or causing an accidental death.
In exchange for their guns, people got to choose from a $50 certificate from a shoe store, $10 gift card to a restaurant or a $20 gift card for an outdoors store.
