Cape baby born 5 seconds after midnight on Jan. 1

BOSTON  (MyFoxBoston.com) - A baby born on Cape Cod was the first born in Massachusetts and among the first in the nation in 2013.

According to Cape Cod Hospital, Marie M. Meritus had a baby boy at 12:00:05 a.m. EST.  The baby was named Max Benjamin Pierre.

Cape Cod Hospital said that an inter-hospital email system has indicated that Max is one of the first babies to be born in 2013,  but it was not known if he was officially the first.

Fox 25 Senior Web Producer Doug Perry determined that a baby girl was born at 12:00:03 a.m. PST in Reno, Nev. on Jan. 1. It was not immediately known if time zone differences are counted in determining which baby was officially deemed to be the first born in the United States. Fox 25 has reached out to a number of record-keeping organizations to get an explanation.

It was also not immediately known if any other babies were born before Max in Eastern Standard Time in the United States.

About a minute into the new year, a baby was born at Leominster Hospital to Stephanie Rivera. Rivera named her child Bentley.

Meanwhile, Massachusetts General Hospital announced the first baby born at their facility was at 12:09 a.m. Sophanie Sejour, who is in Boston from Haiti, had a baby girl. The hospital said the mother and her child are doing well.

Nineteen minutes later, at 12:28 a.m., a baby was born to Ashley Andrade, of Falmouth, and Carlos Jurado, of Bronx, N.Y., at Falmouth Hospital.
