BOSTON — Bring your own bottle, Boston!

The Boston city council has approved new rules making "BYOB" a reality within the next few months.

Wednesday night, the city's licensing board approved rules and regulations allowing customers to bring in wine or beer to small restaurants who have a license.

There are a few restrictions, though. BYOB will only be available between 5 p.m. and 11 p.m. Only wine and malt beverages, like beer and hard soda, will be allowed.

The other catch? Certain neighborhoods, including most of downtown, are not included in the new rules. BYOB-friendly neighborhoods include Allston-Brighton, Charlestown, Dorchester, East Boston, Hyde Park, Jamaica Plain, Mattapan, Mission Hill, Roslindale, Roxbury, West Roxbury, and some parts of South Boston.

The city is expected to start issuing licenses sometime this spring.
