Buyers beware of fake Patriots AFC Championship game tickets

As the excitement for the AFC Championship game grows, so does the demand for tickets.

As Emerson College student Jake Haddock discovered, it's a jungle out there. Haddock checked several of the big resale sites like StubHub and Vivid, where the average ticket price for Sunday's game is nearly $700!

He also looked on Craigslist, where some seats are listed much cheaper - four tickets at $180 each.

"People are either asking too much, or they don't seem legitimate," said Haddock.

He contacted one poster who offered him four for the bargain price of $200 each; below face value.

"Things didn't really work out because he wanted me to send him money to him via PayPal and it was starting to get a little bit fishy," said Haddock.

A wise choice. Boston 25 News reporter Ted Daniel showed a licensed ticket broker a picture of the tickets Jake passed on.

"100 percent fake. They have the wrong face value on them."

John Higgins owns Higgs Tickets in Boston. He says scam artists have nearly perfected the art of printing bogus tickets that look legit, and they prey on desperation. Most people don't realize they've been taken on a ride until it's too late.

"If the deal sounds too good to be true, it typically is."
