Brookline votes to ban Styrofoam

(FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) -  The town of Brookline overwhelmingly approved a ban on Styrofoam Tuesday night. This could mean big changes for local restaurants and coffee shops.

People do not like change, especially when it comes to something as routine as a morning cup of coffee. The feel of the morning routine is certainly going to change for those that run on Dunkin' in Brookline.    

In an overwhelming vote of 169 to 27, Styrofoam is out. Citing environmental effects, the town voted to ban Styrofoam at food and beverage stores, which means the five Dunkin' Donuts in Brookline have until December of next year to find replacements for their cups.
    
The franchise reportedly argues a ban will not reduce waste or increase recycling, but instead only increase cup costs by more than 50 percent for its owners.
    
The idea to make the move came when a Brookline town official reportedly got a cup of coffee at a Dunkin' Donuts in Great Barrington. That town also implemented a Styrofoam ban and forced the store to move to paper cups 22 years ago.

So your takeout in Brookline won't come in Styrofoam and now your doggie bag may change, as well. The town is now considering a proposal on banning plastic checkout bags.
