Brookline man shot after charging at officer with knife

BROOKLINE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – One man was shot by an officer after charging at him with a knife in Brookline Friday.

At about 7:50 p.m., police responded to an apartment on Beacon Street for the report of a man using inhalants and wielding a knife, officials say. It was also reported that the man, 27, had threatened two people with the weapon.

When police arrived and knocked on the door of the apartment, the man opened the door and ran toward the officers with the knife.

"When they knocked on the door, the subject opened the door and quickly charged at the officers with a knife. One of the officers was able to fire off two rounds fearing for officer safety," Lt. Phillip Harrington said.

Although two rounds were fired, the man was only hit once. He was transported to the hospital, officials say.

The officer who fired the rounds has been placed on paid leave, per department policy. Preliminary reports indicate that the officers acted appropriately, but the investigation remains ongoing.
