BROOKLINE (FOX 25 / MyFoxBoston.com) – First it was Styrofoam, and now, plastic bags are out in Brookline.
In an overwhelming vote Wednesday night, the town approved a ban on plastic checkout bags 142 to 53. It affects supermarkets with more than $1 million in gross sales during the previous tax year and retail pharmacies with at least two locations in the town limits.
Stores have until December 2013 to get rid of the plastic bags.
On Tuesday, Brookline approved a ban on Styrofoam, which takes effect at the same time.
