Brockton man freed in drug lab scandal charged for Belmont Street murder

BROCKTON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com/AP) – A 22-year-old Brockton man has been charged with the murder of another Brockton man who was fatally shot in a Belmont Street driveway Tuesday.

Donta Hood was taken into custody at a Dorchester residence on O'Callaghan Way at about 12 p.m. Thursday. He was arrested without incident.

Police responded to 227 Belmont St. at about 4:09 p.m. Tuesday. Upon arrival, they found 45-year-old Charles Evans lying in the driveway with apparent gunshot wounds to his chest area. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead a short time later.

Hood was convicted of dealing cocaine in 2009 at a trial in which former state lab chemist Annie Dookhan testified about evidence.

Dookhan has pleaded not guilty to fabricating drug test results and lying about her academic qualifications. Authorities have said she tested drug samples involving 34,000 defendants over nine years.

Dozens of defendants whose cases she handled have been freed pending new trials. Hood's case was dismissed in November.

Hood was arraigned Friday in Brockton District Court.
