Braintree mayor warns of exposed storm drains after thefts

BRAINTREE, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – Police in Braintree are investigating the thefts of seven drain covers throughout the town.

Mayor Joseph Sullivan said the iron drain covers, which weigh nearly 100 pounds, were stolen from drains on Commercial, Hayward, and Old Elm street over a period of 48 hours. He believes people may be stealing them to sell them for scrap, reports The Patriot Ledger.

Because of their weight, Sullivan also believes the thefts are the work of more than one person, reports the newspaper. He is urging residents to be aware of exposed storm drains.

Anyone who sees an uncovered storm drain is asked to contact the Braintree Dept. of Public Works at 781-794-8950
