Braintree karate instructor charged with child rape

FRANKLIN, Mass. -- A karate instructor who worked in Braintree has been arrested on child rape charges after previously having been accused of indecent assault on a different child.

Franklin police arrested Kevin Carmichael at his apartment on a warrant from Braintree police.

Carmichael opened a Masters Self Defense studio in Braintree on Quincy Avenue in 2003.

The website for his center shows he has taught karate in after school programs on the South Shore.

The 45-year-old was acquitted on a charge that he sexually assaulted one of his students in 2013.

In that case, prosecutors allegedly that he touched a female student inappropriately, but Carmichael said it was an accident.

The Norfolk County District Attorney told Boston 25 News that the new charges involve a different child, but are from the same time frame as the original charge.

The new allegations took place in 2012 and 2013. Charges include rape of a child, rape of a child with force, assault to rape and two counts of indecent assault and battery on a  child under 14.
