BPD says 7-year-old's drowning was accident

BOSTON — The drowning of a 7-year-old boy at a Boston summer camp has been ruled accidental, according to Boston police.

FOX25 was at a news conference today with Boston Police Commisioner Evans who said there was no foul play involved in the death of Kyzr Willis.

"This was just an unfortunate, tragic accident, and we see no foul play whatsoever," Evans told FOX25.

Kyzr was one of 56 campers with 28 counselors between the ages of 15 and 18 years old based out of the Curley Community Center.

On the day of the drowning, police said that the family's niece was at the camp and called Kyzr's mother at 2:38 p.m. to say the child was missing.

At 2:40 p.m., lifeguards began searching the water and the beaches were shut down.

A witness told Boston police that Kyzr was seen exiting the bathhouse, so they searched the street for the child, in addition to a large water search.

Evans said that Kyzr was a weak swimmer and had been working with a counselor on learning to swim the day he died.

The boy's body was found about 20 yards out on sonar detection. A diver then went down and retrieved the body.

Counselors said Kyzr was a stellar camper and a standout among the other children.
