Boy scout troop deals with stolen property

WALTHAM, Mass. — Boy Scout Troop 248 in Waltham was headed on a biking trip early one morning when they realized they were missing something crucial.

They park their equipment trailer in a local church parking lot, and when they arrived to start packing up their bikes, it was gone.

Someone had stolen it.

"It's just too bad, kind of shocked us. Not just being a boy scout troop but stolen right from church property," said Mike Ripely, a committee member for the troop.

They use the trailer to transport the majority of their equipment, and without it their future trips are limited.

"We're lost without it," Ripley said.

A new trailer will cost the troop thousands of dollars."It is expensive. We estimate to replace that trailer we had would be around $3,600," Ripley explained.

"So what happens, when something like this, there's no money in the treasury to pay for it," said Steven Mann, the troop's treasurer added.

Luckily there was nothing inside the trailer at the time of the theft.

Parents also rallied together by driving all the boys who were supposed to go on the trip to Martha's Vineyard.

"Fortunately we've got a lot of really good parents that were able to scramble to be able to drive the kids from Waltham down to the Cape to be able to make the ferry on time," said Mann.

The troop just started a GoFundMe page to try and raise money for a new trailer so they can continue camping this season.

They've already raised over $1,500.
