HOPKINTON, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) -- A 13-year-old boy died Wednesday after he was hit by a car while riding his bicycle in Hopkinton.
Investigators say the boy, identified as Shayne Desroches, was attempting to cross Route 85 at about 5 p.m. when he was hit. He was transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The driver, a 16-year-old female, stopped at the scene. She was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Investigators said she did not have any passengers in the car.
The office of the superintendent of Hopkinton Public Schools released a statement Thursday saying Desroches, who they did not identify by name, was an eighth grade student at Hopkinton Middle School.
"Our school community is deeply saddened by this loss and we extend our sincere sympathy to the family of our student," read the statement in-part.
The school system has made counselors available to students in need of support.
Steve Travis said his son, Shawn, rides his bike to and from school on the same road every day, and that it isn't safe. He said people speed and there aren't sidewalks.
The Middlesex County District Attorney's office says the fatal crash is under investigation. No charges have been filed.
