Box containing human remains found along road in Duxbury

DUXBURY, Mass. (AP) - Authorities say they've found a box containing human remains in Duxbury.

Police responded Sunday morning after a father and son reported finding a suspicious box at the intersection of Alexander Way and Walker Road. When officers arrived, they say they noticed a strong odor coming from the box, which was partially opened.

"We thought maybe it was like the construction crew next door that had left a box there, and we just kind of moved it out of the street a little bit," said Chandler Rodriguez, one of the men who found the box.

Rodriguez said the box appeared to be wrapped several times. A state police bomb unit X-rayed the package and determined that it contained what appeared to be human remains. Police told Rodriguez that the body was mangled and the gender unknown.

"We were notified first because we had touched it," Rodriguez said. "I think everyone just felt so horrible for the victim and whoever their family is out there."

Authorities say the state medical examiner's office will examine and identify the remains. Neighbors report the body had actually been there since about 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

"The whole neighborhood's been kind of in shell shock the last day, because nothing like this ever happens in this neighborhood," Rodriguez said. "It's always so quiet."

State police and Duxbury police continue to investigate.
