Bouncer charged with assault fired

BOSTON (AP) - A bouncer at a Boston bar who's been charged with kicking, punching and choking patrons who had been asked to leave has been fired.

The owner of The Grand Canal said in a statement Thursday that Sidney Phillips was fired "after complete details" of the incident became known.

Owner Dave Murray says he was "distressed and saddened" by the allegations against the 31-year-old Phillips, who is free on bail after pleading not guilty to charges including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

Police say the assault at about 1:30 a.m. Sunday was captured on cellphone video.

It started when a group of about 10 people was asked to leave after inadvertently bumping a woman while taking a photo, sparking an argument. The incident sent two men and two women to the hospital.

Full Statement From Grand Canal Owner Dave Murray:

"The Grand Canal is distressed and saddened by the recent actions of one of its former employees, who was terminated after complete details of the incident on March 23rd became known. This type of conduct will not be tolerated. We continue to work cooperatively with authorities. The Grand Canal respects and appreciates our patrons and anyone who walks through our doors. We are committed to providing a safe environment where patrons can enjoy themselves in the company of others.

While we have always had appropriate training procedures in place for our staff, we have reexamined those procedures and have created a process to enhance and improve our training for all employees, who are responsible for the comfort and safety of our patrons. Changes that have been made, with others to follow, include arranging for police details for appropriate times and a thorough indoctrination of rules and regulations of the City Licensing Board and the Mayor's Licensing Division, with periodic refresher sessions.

The Grand Canal appreciates the support of our patrons as we continue to operate our business in a community that we are very thankful to be part of."
