Boston steps up security in wake of Manchester attack

BOSTON — The city of Boston is keeping an eye on the tragic events that unfolded after an Ariana Grande concert in the United Kingdom, and is stepping up security in the wake of the attack that left at least 22 people dead.

TD Garden will host Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals Thursday night, and while Boston police say there is no specific threat to the city, officers will be ready for the large crowds that are expected.

Manchester Arena, the site of the deadly terror attack, is about the same size at TD Garden with a seating capacity of 19,600.

And as we get ready to head into a holiday weekend, a 3-day music festival will be held at the Harvard Athletic Complex.

While the event won’t be held indoors, it’s expected to draw large crowds rain or shine. The event is expected to last until 11 p.m. throughout the event’s run.

Keep in mind there are restrictions as to what people can bring to the events.

For anyone heading to the game Thursday night, bags, backpacks and purses larger than a wristlet won’t be allowed. Guests will walk through metal detectors.

For Boston Calling, organizers are asking for items to be in a small, clear plastic bag and no bags larger than 12x12 will be allowed. Other restrictions include no strollers or umbrellas.

“We are deeply saddened about the recent tragedy in Manchester, England. Our thoughts are with all of the victims and their families, as well as the performers, crew, producers, and the entire Manchester community," Boston Calling co-founders Brian Appel and Mike Snow said in a statement. "The safety of our fans remains our number one priority. We continue to work with Boston, State, Cambridge and MBTA Police to take all appropriate steps to ensure our event will be executed in a safe and secure manner for everyone this weekend."

Boston police said people need to prepare to allow for extra time because of the planned increase in security at the events.
