BOSTON SNOW EMERGENCY: What residents need to know

Parking in Boston can be a challenge even when the weather is clear, but during a snow emergency drivers need to be even more aware about where vehicles are parked.

A snow emergency in Boston goes into effect at 7 a.m., and the city does not allow parking on major roads and arteries during declared snow emergencies.

“We will ticket and tow your car if you park on a posted snow emergency artery during a declared snow emergency,” the city says on its website.

For drivers unable to locate a parking spot, some lots and garages offer discounted parking to vehicles with Boston resident parking stickers.

Parking at participating lots and garages can begin two hours before the start of the declared snow emergency, and vehicles must be removed within two hours after the emergency is lifted.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh said hundreds of pieces of equipment will be on city streets working to clear snow from roads.

He urged residents to stay home Tuesday if possible.

"We are encouraging residents to stay off the roads during the storm, to assist older residents and those with disabilities, and to keep up with the shoveling of their property throughout the storm,” Walsh said.

Anyone with an emergency should call 911, and all other non-emergency calls should be made to 311.
