Boston sailor completes solo trip around the world

Les Sables d'Olonne, France — A Boston man has successfully completed his second trip around the world.

Sailor Rich Wilson set off on November 6 as a competitor in the Vendée Globe, a non-stop solo race around the world. Wilson finished the race, which starts and ends off the west coast of France, Tuesday, coming in 13th place.

At 66 years old, Wilson was the oldest skipper competing. He finished the race in just over 107 days. Overall, he sailed 27,480 miles at an average speed of 10.70 knots, making him the fastest American to race solo non-stop around the world

This isn't Wilson's first time sailing around the globe -- he completed his first Vendée Globe in 2009.

When asked about his age, Wilson said he hopes to inspire older people to pursue their dreams.

"I am not ready for the pipe and slippers. Age is just a number." Wilson said prior to setting off in November.
