Boston rings in New Year with First Night

BOSTON ( – Thousands gathered in Boston on New Year's Eve for First Night.

As Boston counts down to 2014, revelers came out in full force to ring in the New Year. Among them, Boston's Mayor Tom Menino watched over his final First Night in the grand procession.

In the crowd the Phanauf family checked out all the ice sculptures, including the one made as a tribute to the Boston Marathon.

"I love this, it's awesome," Donna Phanauf said. "I'm looking forward to running again this year and making it through that finish line."

There was a large police presence at the event, watching over everything a little more closely in a post marathon Boston.

"People are concerned and I can understand that but we have significant presence of officers and a good security plan so I am hoping everyone comes out and enjoys the night," Acting Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said.
