Boston public schools to change start and release times next year

BOSTON — Some students in Boston will be sleeping in next year.

The Boston Public School Committee voted unanimously Wednesday night on a plan to push back start times at some of the schools.

The final details were released Thursday, and more high schools are going to start after 8 a.m. - while more elementary schools will dismiss before 4 p.m.

The motive? Allow those school children - especially teenagers - get more sleep.

Officials say it's believed that could improve grades and test scores.

Another positive side affect - it can help alleviate rush hour traffic, with buses on the road later in the morning and earlier in the afternoon.

And it will allow kids to walk home when it's still light out - even in the dead of winter.

The new start and ent times are for the 2018-2019 school year and do not go into effect until the fall. The times also need final approval from the state.
