Boston Public Schools extends school day for 39 schools

BOSTON — Students at 39 Boston public schools can expect to spend a little more time in the classroom come September.

City officials announced Wednesday that the Extra learning time (ELT) program has been expanded and now covers over 36,000 students. On average, students will get an extra 40 minutes of instructional time next year.

The longer school day comes as a part of Boston Public Schools' $14 million plan. BPS says there will be no changes to the school funding formula.

The teacher's union tells the Boston Herald they're concerned busing and transportation could be an issue for students.
