Boston Pops celebration cut short by storm

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) -- Wild weather forced an abrupt end to the Boston Pops Fireworks Spectacular Thursday.

Fireworks lit up the sky over the Charles River, but they went off about a half an hour ahead of schedule.

The display ended just minutes before a severe thunderstorm hit the Esplanade. State Police were able to safely evacuate the area.

The Boston Pops were unable to perform their famous version of the 1812 Overture because of the storm.

Before the rain moved in, tens of thousands of fans braved sweltering temperatures to get a prime seat near the Hatch Shell. Boston EMS says 89 people were treated at medical tents because of heat exhaustion and other injuries. A total of 15 people were transported to local hospitals.

The concert and fireworks were moved to Thursday to get out of the way of Hurricane Arthur.
