Boston police make arrest in shooting death of man in McDonald's parking lot

BOSTON — Boston police said they have arrested a man in connection with the shooting death of a man in a McDonald’s parking lot last Thursday.

Deonarine Ganga, 29, of Dorchester, was arrested Thursday morning and charged with murder.

Just after 4 p.m. on April 13, police responded to a report of a man who was shot in a McDonald’s parking lot on Gallivan Boulevard in Dorchester.

When police arrived they found the victim, Joey DeBarros, 21, suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. He was taken to Boston Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Police said it appeared as though DeBarros and Ganga has been involved in a traffic dispute that ended up with Ganga firing shots at DeBarros, hitting him while he was outside his vehicle.

"My detectives worked tirelessly on this case from the beginning. Their hard work and commitment to seek justice for this young man was matched by the cooperation of the public who offered assistance," Boston Police Commissioner William Evans said. "We are pleased that we were able to arrest and charge the suspect for this brazen daytime shooting and for his involvement in the earlier assault. We hope that these charges bring some peace to the DeBarros family during what is surely a most difficult time."

Ganga is currently in custody at the Suffolk County Jail after his arrest by the Boston Police Department Fugitive Apprehension Unit on Friday. He was arrested on a warrant for assault with a dangerous weapon stemming from an incident on April 7.

Police said during that incident Ganga used a firearm to threaten another person inside a Dorchester Avenue business.
