Boston on-demand bus service Bridj announces it's shutting down

BOSTON — A Boston-based on-demand bus service similar to ride-sharing companies is shutting down, according to the company.

Bridj, a service that coordinates special bus-services based on demand, announced on its website Sunday it would begin shuttering its company.

The bus company has been based in Boston, but also serviced Washington D.C. and Kansas City.

Bridj had entered into discussions with the MBTA late last year to negotiate taking over late night service for the system. However, no decisions were ever made.

According to the company's web posting, some sort of monetary deal with "a major car company" hit speed bumps and seemingly ran the company out of money.

The company tweeted the news Sunday and posted a message on its website, along with the Kenny Rogers song 'The Gambler.'
