Boston mayoral candidates to square off in first debate

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – For the first time on the same stage, voters will be able to get a good look at the 12 people who want to be Boston's next mayor. It's a job that hasn't seen turnover in 20 years.

The candidates will meet for a debate at the Modern Theater at Suffolk University at 8 p.m. Monday.

In just a couple of weeks, residents of Boston will have a good idea who will be their next mayor. Twelve candidates are vying to fill the seat which wields tremendous power and influence not only in Boston, but also the region.

"Boston is the economic engine that drives not only Massachusetts, but most of New England," Dr. Bob Rosenthal, the Chairman of the Communications and Journalism Department at Suffolk University said. "People come here to our universities, to our hospitals."

Dr. Rosenthal said the new mayor will play a major role in the economic health of the city and the region. The next mayor will also be dealing with some major issues, including development, schools, and the casino.

So far, the candidates in the top tier include City Councilor John Connolly, State Rep. Marty Walsh, and Suffolk County District Attorney Dan Conley.

However, there is still time for a lesser known candidate to break away from the pack.

Dr. Rosenthal said old fashioned retail politics, such as "hitting the doors, pressing doorbells, handing out literature, and getting the vote out," could make all the difference.

A primary will be held on Sept. 24 with a general election in November. Current mayor Tom Menino has yet to endorse a candidate.
