Boston Marathon historian proposes memorial running bridge

BOSTON (MyFoxBoston.com) – A Boston Marathon historian is looking to memorialize the victims of the marathon bombings with a bridge over the Massachusetts Turnpike.

Tom Derderian has proposed replacing the Linden to Lincoln Street pedestrian walkway with the memorial.

Derderian's proposed bridge features a curved walkway suspended by a cabled arch over the Pike. He said that everyone driving into Boston would see it and that runners training for the Marathon would pass over it.

"The Boston Strong Bridge would symbolize strength and defiance and, of course, enhance Boston as a pedestrian city friendly to bikers and runners, Derderian wrote in the latest issue of New England Runner.

Boston Mayor Tom Menino has said a remembrance committee would be formed to help establish a memorial. Three people were killed and more than 260 others were injured in the bombings. Nineteen-year-old Dzhokhar Tsarnaev faces more than 30 charges in connection with the attacks. He was arraigned earlier this week.
