Boston bus carriers try to get back on the road

BOSTON (AP) — Two Boston-based bus companies that offered rock bottom fares to New York before being taken off the road by federal authorities over safety concerns are trying to get rolling again.

Officials with Fung Wah and Lucky Star say they have spent millions on new buses, safety consultants, and retraining drivers and other employees in an effort to get their operating licenses back.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, the Department of Transportation agency that regulates interstate bus travel, said it will evaluate the companies' applications to resume operations.

If approved, they could be running buses between the cities later this fall.

Lucky Star's owner tells The Boston Globe (http://b.globe.com/1fMq4qh ) the downside is that he may raise fares.

Fung Wah was taken off the road in March, Lucky Star in June.
