Boston bombing suspects planned Times Square bombing

NEW YORK CITY (MyFoxBoston.com) -- The brothers accused of setting off bombs at the Boston marathon were planning to detonate bombs in New York City, Mayor Michael Bloomberg says.

At a Thursday afternoon press conference, Bloomberg and NYPD commissioner Ray Kelly said Dzhokhar Tsarnaev initially told FBI interrogators that he and his brother, 26-year-old Tamerlan Tsarnaev, had planned to drive to New York City last Thursday to "party."

But during a second round of questioning, Tsarnaev reportedly told investigators that the two had spontaneously decided to drive to New York City Thursday to bomb Times Square. Bloomberg said the plan fell apart when they stopped for gas for a stolen car in Watertown, Mass. and got caught in a shootout with police.

Police said the brothers had an additional pressure-cooker bomb and five pipe bombs at the time of the shootout.

Tsarnaev, 19, fled only to be captured Friday evening after climbing into a boat at a home in Watertown. He was in a hospital recovering from several gunshot wounds and had refused to answer further questions from investigators after being read his Miranda warning.

Early Friday morning, the U.S. Marshals Service released a statement confirming that Dzhokhar Tsarnaev has been transported from Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and is now confined at the Bureau of Prisons facility FMC Devens at Ft. Devens, Mass.

Tamerlan Tsarnaev died following the Watertown shootout.

The brothers are accused in the Boston Marathon bombings that killed three and injured more than 250 as well as the killing of an MIT police officer.
