Blast of warm weather means big business for Natick maple syrup farm

NATICK, Mass. — The blast of warmer weather we're seeing in New England can mean big business for maple syrup farmers.

FOX25's Daniel Miller visited a sugar shack in Natick Thursday morning, where the farmers at Natick Community Farm were up early for the day's production.

HOW IT WORKS

It takes about 40 gallons of maple sap to make one gallon of maple syrup. Farmers today continue to use Native American and colonial techniques to produce syrup.

At the Natick Community Farm, workers say it's been a good year for production. The farm has 600 silver buckets on sugar maple trees to collect sap. The workers tapped the trees just before one of our recent snow storms to get ready.

There's a science to sugaring -- first, the sap drips into the bucket. Then, the sap is boiled down to make the syrup.

If you'd like to visit, the Natick Community Farm offers maple sugaring tours starting this weekend and going all the way through March 24.
