Black Lives Matter protesters march through Boston

BOSTON — More than 100 people started at Downtown Crossing and marched to Dudley Station in the name of Black Lives Matter Sunday.

"We have to do better as a culture. We have to do better.  This is the United States of America.  And everybody is supposed to be equal equality is all we are here for," said Maruis Anderson, a protester.

The Facebook event said it was to be a peaceful protest, and it was. Officers followed the protest the entire route, as they walked about three miles down Boylston to Mass Ave and then turned on Washington Street, ending at Dudley Square Plaza.

"I hope it encourages people to start policing smarter and brings the community together with the police to do so," said Dani Poole, a protester.

The crowd was chanting, "What do we want? Justice! When do we want it? Now!"

At Dudley Square Plaza, leaders discussed the need to stand together. Officers stood outside the Boston Police Headquarters, which is across the street, watching and listening.

"If you're not in the know, you're on the go," said one speaker, discussing the importance of community engagement.

"We have a pretty good crowd here. We need to keep moving forward. Not backwards," said Boston Police Supt. Bernard O'Rourke.

The protest comes after two black men were shot by police this past week, one in Louisiana and the other in Minnesota. A peaceful Black Lives Matter protest in Dallas Thursday night suddenly turned violent when a man shot and killed five Dallas officers.
