Bill would expand benefits for Mass. veterans

BOSTON (AP) - A bill designed to expand benefits and increase protections for veterans has been unanimously approved by the Massachusetts Senate.

This bill makes "Gold Star" families eligible for funds from the Military Family Relief Fund and creates a new "Support our Veterans" license plate to honor those who have served in the military.

The bill also updates the design of the license plate for individuals who have been awarded the Order of the Purple Heart to also read, "Combat Wounded," to help explain the nature of the designation.

The legislation also prohibits anyone from claiming to fundraise for a designated veterans' charitable organization when donations would benefit a different organization.

It also increases the buffer zone of 500 feet to 1,000 feet for demonstrations at military funerals.

The bill now heads to the House.
