Bill aims to change law after Aaron Hernandez's suicide

BOSTON — A proposed bill aims to make sure convicts like Aaron Hernandez can’t erase their convictions if they commit suicide in prison.

Currently the existing law clears convictions if a suspect dies before fully appealing their case.

The controversial law was the same one used to clear Hernandez in the 2013 murder of Odin Lloyd after his April suicide.

Rep. Evandro Carvalho told the Boston Herald that he wanted to help change the law after hearing from Lloyd's mother, Ursula Ward. According to the Herald, Ward contacted Carvalho after Hernandez's conviction was overturned with the hopes of him helping to craft a bill that would prevent that from happening again.

Hernandez was found hanged in his prison cell just days after he was acquitted in a double murder in the South End in 2012.
