Big Papi receiving honorary degree from BU

BOSTON — Just call him Dr. Big Papi.

Boston University will present David Oritz an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters at the May 21 graduation.

The university noted not only Ortiz's contribution to the sports world and the Boston Red Sox, but also his many charitable contributions.

In 2005, he founded the David Ortiz Children's Fund, which helps provide critical pediatric care to children in New England and his native Dominican Republic, who do not have ready access to such services.

He was a 10-time All-Star baseball player, has three world Series rings and helped end the 86-year championship drought.

Other people receiving honorary degrees from Boston Unviersity this year include NBC Universal's Bonnie Hammer, Nobel Prize winner Mario Molina, BU trustee Robert Knox and BU Parents Leadership Council chairwoman Jeanne Knox.
