Beverly woman finds handbag with $11,000 inside

BEVERLY (AP) — A Beverly woman was shopping for sweaters at a Swampscott store when an attractive Vera Bradley handbag on the rack caught her eye.

Cheryl Gavazzi decided to check it out, looked inside, and found more than $11,000 in cash.

She took the bag to police.

Police tell The Salem News (http://bit.ly/THX5oD ) the handbag had been left at the Marshalls store earlier by another customer, and the money had been raised by a man to help build a church in Guatemala. Gavazzi, who works for a bank, said the man told her his wife had placed the bag on the rack while tending to their children and forgot about it.

Gavazzi says she returned the money because it was "the right thing to do," although she did get a small reward.
