Beverly cancels parade, citing aging veterans

BEVERLY, Mass. (MyFoxBoston.com) – There are a few expectations that make up a good Memorial Day: sunshine, a barbeque, a parade. But in Beverly, the annual march of veterans may be a thing of the past.

The city says the failing health of veterans has made it difficult for the men to complete the walk. The number of those who are able to participate has become smaller each year, and so have the crowds who turn out to see them. Instead, the Beverly Patch reports veterans gathered at Odell Park.

According to The Boston Globe, last Memorial Day, about 25 veterans marched in the parade, but each passing year, sees fewer veterans.
    
Many younger veterans are now employed as first responders and work the holiday. Either way, the spectators have dwindled, as well.
    
One veteran told the Globe that the throngs of people who lined the streets in Beverly to cheer on American Idol finalist Angie Miller in her parade just a few weeks ago reminded him of the number of spectators who used to turn out and cheer for the veterans.

Veterans in Beverly say they understand and support the change.
