Back Bay resident says marijuana dispensary comments meant as satire

BOSTON – A Boston man says comments he made about veterans with PTSD and cancer patients at a medical marijuana dispensary hearing were meant to be satirical, not offensive.

At a meeting in Back Bay Wednesday night, Oliver Curme took to the podium and rattled off a list of reasons not to allow the business.

“There are Army vets with PTSD, we don’t want them in the neighborhood. Just give me a break they can get over it,” the Comm. Ave. resident said. “People in wheelchairs with MS or whatever. Women with breast cancer they all have that cadaverous look and they wear those ridiculous turbans.”

Curme told Boston 25 News the statements were meant to be outrageous to make a point that there’s no reason not to allow the medical facility.

“I was being satirical unfortunately they cut me off before I could get to the end of my speech and make that clear,” he said.

Curme claims he's been a supporter of the dispensary all along and says he even wrote a letter in support of it back in August.

He says he was only mocking what he believes are bogus concerns.

“My words have ignited a firestorm of controversy and it really pissed people off as it should.  I think I'm glad the issue is out there,” he said.
